Chelsa and I head to upstate NY almost every weekend. Here are some of our favorite spots near Kingston (about 2 hours north of NYC, west of the river)
Dens: Some of the best greek gyros I've ever had. Great spot for lunch and people watching. Get the Athena for sure (gyro w/ greek salad), and the Greek iced-coffee/frappe thing if you're feeling crazy.
Dens: Best tacos on Kingston (and great spot to drink a sidewalk beer on summer wkds). Never snooze on the specials menu, always get the street corn, and watch out because the margaritas are strong.
Dens: One of the best spots to eat in Kingston IMHO. The buffalo cauliflower will blow your mind. Fried oysters are a close 2nd. Don't miss the back deck (took me 2x here to notice it!)
Dens: Amazing spot for lunch. I always go for the lamb in the pita + fries + Greek cherry soda. DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THE GREEK YOGURT! (the salted caramel is A+++)
Dens: Best breakfast we've found within 20mi of anywhere. The Bloody Marys are top notch and the skillets are epic. ProTip: start with the breakfast tacos as an appetizer!
Dens: This spot is insanely good. Don't order anything till you give Daily Specials a look. The hash browns (french fries with garlic and olive oil!) will blow your mind. Staff raves about the corned beef.
Dens: Yes, the 500 beers are impressive, but the real story is the burger which is fantastic. Worth driving 30 min for, esp if you are starving. (kicking myself for not taking a photo of said burger, btw)
