The remains of the Middle Ages in Montenegro have not been sufficiently analyzed and well protected, but remain extremely interesting. Here we show some exciting abstracts from the earlier epochs.
Digitalizuj.Me: Your trip to medieval age of Montenegro starts here! The second largest city in Montenegro and the biggest municipality of this state, founded back in the 4th century AD by Romans army.
Digitalizuj.Me: Ski Resort, but also a great place for a summer vacation! Excellent food and a nice place to spend a night. Bed and breakfast during summer season costs 15 Eur. For more information, see www.vucje.me
Digitalizuj.Me: The bridge was built in 1896, and it is one of the most beautiful bridges in Montenegro. It was built with the help of Russian Czar Alexander III, whom it was named after.
Digitalizuj.Me: The plan to build a bridge was made by Dr. Joseph Slade, by order of King Nikola Petrovic. This magnificent bridge was built on arches that make up 18 wells; it is 269m long and 13m high.
Digitalizuj.Me: This fortress remained of the medieval town Onogošt, which developed into the city of Nikšić. The oldest remains originated in the 5th and 6th century and were built by the Ostrogoths.
Digitalizuj.Me: On the way from Niksic to Trebinje, before Slano Lake, turn left over the dam to the church in Broćanac NIikšićki. The church is placed on the right side of the road; there's a nice view of the lake.
Digitalizuj.Me: There is at least one "stećak" (medieval tombstone) built in the wall of the church, and it is decorated with incised spirals and twisted rope.
Digitalizuj.Me: This part of the road might be under reconstruction and closed every day from 8am to 10am and from 3pm to 5pm. After 5-6 km you will come to the cemetery of Broćanac Viluški.
Digitalizuj.Me: The cemetery is on the right side of the road. There is a group of tombstones, including two vertical ones with nice decorations, placed on a hill.
Digitalizuj.Me: From Broćanac Viluški move on to the village Petrovići, go through the village and after you pass 2km from the turning, turn to the monastery Kosijerovo (follow the signs).
Digitalizuj.Me: A new monastery is near the old church, which is on the right side of the monastery and decorated with beautiful and very original frescoes. At the cemetery, there are two very old crosses.
Digitalizuj.Me: After Kosijerovo, return to the intersection and turn left towards Bileca. After 7km, at Počekovići, on the left side you'll see a vertical tombstone lying in the field, and 5 more large gravestones.
Digitalizuj.Me: A small church of St. Ignjatije is located near Počekovići; there are a few more old tombstones at the cemetery surrounding the church.
Digitalizuj.Me: There are two locations with medieval tombstones here, at the cemetery on the right side of the road. A larger site with 35 tombstones is located on the hill behind the cemetery.
Digitalizuj.Me: From Vraćenovići go back to Petrovići - take the same road you took to get here. Then drive towards Niksic first and, at the next intersection, follow the signs towards Klenak, on the way to Velimlje.
Digitalizuj.Me: Some excellent locations can be found near Velimlje. On the right side of the road that leads from Klenak to Velimlje, at the Perovići turning, stands the church which was built in 1500.
Digitalizuj.Me: A dozen of tombstones with inscriptions and decorations is built in the wall of this church. One such stone is placed on the left side of the iconostasis.
Digitalizuj.Me: Near the church from 1500, at the Miljanići turning, on the left side above the road is a church with two huge vertical tombstones and a sarcophagus which lies on the graveyard, among other graves.
Digitalizuj.Me: From Velimlje continue towards the main road Trebinje - Niksić. Before you get to Nikšić, follow the sign "Most na Moštanici" and turn to the left, towards the old bridge.
Digitalizuj.Me: Bridge is located on the right side of the road, and the church with the cemetery is on the left side. Behind the cemetery is a large site with medieval tombstones.
Digitalizuj.Me: Pass right through the intersection to the elementary school, 500m away. On the right side, next to a primary school, there is a site with tombstones.
Digitalizuj.Me: According to the data which can be found on the Internet, this site is a protected cultural monument. However, it is mostly covered in shrubs.
Digitalizuj.Me: It has been moved to the current location in 1982, because of the construction of hydro-power plant on the river Piva. Inside, you can see the beautiful frescoes.
Digitalizuj.Me: When you go from Plužine to Žabljak the road meanders alongside the Piva Lake. You should turn right at the sign "Durmitor". The road leads through numerous tunnels, and then through Trsa and Pišče.
Digitalizuj.Me: The road Plužine - Zabljak passes by the cheese factory "Pišče". Here you can see how cottage cheese and cream are made. Visitors can also buy some of these products, if they want.
Digitalizuj.Me: The restaurant was named after the Duke Momčilo, who, according to legend, lived in Pirlitor - a town situated near the place where Žabljak is today - and had a flying horse, Jabučilo.
Digitalizuj.Me: If you want, you can rent a bike in the center of Žabljak (across from the supermarket) and bike for the rest of the route. Length of the path is 38km, at almost the same altitude.
Digitalizuj.Me: Zminičko Lake is the only habitat - the only one in the world - where the species Serdarski Triton lives. This lake is a 15-minute drive away from Njegovuđa.
Digitalizuj.Me: From Zminičko Lake go back to Njegovuđa, and then continue straight towards Šavnik, through Bare Žugića, along the narrow asphalt road.
Digitalizuj.Me: In one of the turns, after passing a group of houses (one house has a yellow roof), on your right above the road, there's an old cemetery with well-preserved tombstones, many of which are decorated.
Digitalizuj.Me: Stay on the same road to the village Novakovići, where you'll find another "Greek Cemetery" (as the locals from Žabljak refer to these groups of tombstones).
Digitalizuj.Me: This cemetery is located right above the road, on the hill across from Riblje Lake. This is the most famous necropolis and it's in a very good condition.
Digitalizuj.Me: Obviously, these tombstones (just like the tombstones in Bare Žugića) were carefully cleaned and preserved, and that's why these locations are the most interesting ones.
Digitalizuj.Me: Stay on the road and you'll pass Vražje Lake, which is very beautiful and clean. There's a legend about this lake, according to which the devil lives at its bottom, in the form of a winged red horse.
Digitalizuj.Me: If you've come to this point by bike, turn towards Žabljak to return it. If you are traveling by car, proceed in the direction of Šavnik and follow the sign "Komarnica".
Digitalizuj.Me: When you get to Petnjica, continue in the direction of Nevidio canyon. Between the first and the second Pošćenjsko Lake, on the left side of the road, there is a church in Pošćenje.
Digitalizuj.Me: Near the restaurant "Jatak" is the ethno village "Nevidio" where those who wish can stay overnight. There are hiking and biking trails and 29 free-climbing rocks near the village.
Digitalizuj.Me: Depending on your plans, you can go back to Nikšić and Podgorica on the same evening, or you can spend the night in this mountain village.
