The British Museum began from the collection of naturalist Sir Hans Sloane which he left to the nation on his death in 1753. Now it houses 7 million objects including more than 100 Egyptian mummies.

Tate Modern gets all the attention, but the original Tate Gallery has a more inclusive brief. It opens until 10pm every Friday and Late at Tate Britain takes place on the first Friday of each month. Read more.

Love the spongy seats. Listen out for sciency types having a chinwag. The free wifi is great, but they're clamping down on over-use, especially at lunch time.
