- EaterJuly 18, 2017Peter Luger may reign as the best steakhouse in Brooklyn, but the more intimate St. Anselm holds its own with pitch-perfect steaks and a menu where nearly everything touches the grill.
- The butchers steak is probably the best value steak I've ever had. Truffle oil mashed potatoes are.. well... truffle oil mashed potatoes. Amazing!
- Noah WeissJuly 20, 2018Best $50 dinner for two in the city? Butcher steak, truffled fried mash potatoes, and eggplant three ways.
- Nicole FormicaJuly 14, 2016Worth the wait! The butcher steak and veal are A+. Get lots of sides to share. Try everything! Save room for a Pot De Creme.. This will change your life.
- Sam BearJune 20, 2016Arrive early, put in your name, and grab a drink next door at Spuyten Dyvel while you wait. They'll text when your table is ready and you can even bring your drink from the bar via the back patio. 👍
- Alex KiernanJanuary 13, 2014Amazing! Don't take rezzy, but will call ur cell. Hit up its sister bar next door. When ur table is ready u can bring drinks back! Get the butchers cut and mashed with truffle oil or u fail at life!
- Emily WilsonMarch 19, 2016You can have a delicious and relatively inexpensive meal for 2 if you split an app and the fried truffle mashed potatoes (do not not get these) plus a butcher's steak (only $19.50) each. Or, splurge.
- Kimmie OhhJanuary 3, 2020If you’re a pork lover, order the bourbon brined pork porterhouse. Get potato sides! Pan-fried mashed potatoes are serve with truffle oil & fingerling potatoes are served with charred scallion aioli.
- Hip, happening, delicious, St Anselm can be loud, and wait times can run to 3 hours, but it's worth it for their simple meat cuts and interesting vegetable dishes. Over-salting can be an issue.
- Johnnie SkywalkingMay 17, 2018Start with clam, sardines and scallop. And artichoke. You instantly know why this place is so amazing. Then you will close it with butcher’s steak. Now you know why you have to come back & back again.
- Hanger steak if you’re sharing between two. Tomahawk for a larger group. Upside down pineapple cake for dessert. Reso recommended, otherwise you won’t be seated until 11pm.
- James KiernanJanuary 13, 2014Place was phenomenal. Go with the butcher's cut but every dish looked spectacular. Reasonably priced for a steak place and not as many hipsters as you'd think. Fire it up!!
- Kimmie OhhJanuary 3, 2020The butcher’s steak is essentially hanger steak with garlic butter. The NY strip steak is basically steak au poivre (pepper steak). The veal flank steak is served with chimichurri.Upvoted 1 week ago
- Mara LecocqFebruary 22, 2015The wait is always insane (2.5 hours) but worth it. We ended up waiting 40 min instead so we got lucky. The $16 Butcher's cut was tender and delicious and so affordable. The rest was really good too.
- The New York TimesNovember 29, 2011Recommended dishes: Grilled sardines, iceberg salad, grilled eggplants, grilled steaks, pork chop, lamb saddle, mackerel, scallops, grilled potatoes, long beans, shishito peppers. Read more
- Keren AtzlanSeptember 18, 2021Steaks are so fire. The prawns when they’re on menu. The scallions usually but recently they were different. Bacon YES. The eggplant 3 ways Yes. Mashed potatoes mmmm. Pretty much all sides mmm
- Totally worth the hyper and the wait. The $18 butcher steak is the best deal in town. Sit out back with a beer and they will let you bring it in the back door when your table is ready.
- Butcher steak, spinach, potatoes gratin, Diver scallops , radishes and all the deserts.hard to go wrong
- SOctober 31, 2017The Butchers Steak was as amazing as the grilled fennel. We really enjoyed the atmosphere a lot. Try the Pot de Creme as dessert (salty caramel!).
- If you've managed to save even the tiniest amount of room, order the Chocolate + Salted Caramel Pot De Creme. Nice and light, absolutely delicious
- AmateurConciergeDecember 1, 2017Gotta get that shared ribeye y’all. Sides are all “on fleek”. Spinach ya gratin and mashed taters
- Xin LinSeptember 22, 2014Sardines, whole mackerel, pan fried mash potatoes are the bomb! If your appetite is up for it, try the ax Handel ribeye. Otherwise the hanger steak is banging too!
- Ebee DJanuary 10, 2015Flatiron steak, rib eye are both so delicious and the perfect piece of meat. Scallops are insane. Prawns, like they prob have in heaven. Chicken liver mouse is good even if you don't like. Eggplt = A+
- Alex HunterNovember 28, 2022I imagine it’s lovely year round, but was especially nice on a chilly fall evening. Fingerling potatoes, long beans, artichokes, and of course, steak (or fish, for me).
- Monica DesaiJuly 20, 2018Butchers steak is crazy value, add the truffle mashed potatoes and eggplant for a $50 meal for 2
- Jenny SorensenApril 8, 2015When fellow Williamsburg meat haven Fette Sau is in the family, you know the meat here is going to be good. The divine food at St Anselm pulls a crowd every night, so go early or be prepared to wait. Read more
- NickMay 31, 2015Sit at the chef's counter if you can. We tried orange wine for the first time and loved it. Had clams, butcher steak, and the mashed potato.
- Anthony JonesAugust 7, 2018No reservations but had a sister beer/wine bar next door that was amazing while we were waiting. Apps were perfect, didnt fill us up too much to save room for their steak. Definitely plan to go back!
- steak, burrata, mashed potatoes, bacon and blue salad, trout, prawns, octopus, scallops, wine, desserts, digestif
- 💋Shoshi💋May 1, 2017The ribeye steak is a must! Very tender and juicy. Had the chance to try the ramps which was deliciously good as well. Think it's seasonal. The bacon is sooooo delicious.
- Alex PyatetskyJuly 2, 2017Steak was good, but burrata was ~best I've ever had. Love steak, but not steakhouses. Don't like same bite over and over. Ultimately, you do get that here. Get your veg to come out at the same time.
- Jeremy BassFebruary 20, 2013This place is like if awesome and tasty had a baby. A baby that served giant slabs of cow. Oh and was friends with awesome sides and apps. Demand a belly rub post-meal from your dinner companion.
- This place is so badass. From the food to the wine to the service - and for a totally reasonable price. Diver Scallops, Grilled Halloumi, and BUTCHERS STEAK FTW!
- RJ DuganSeptember 5, 2013On thur-sat nights, get there early—get's really busy. You can sit next door and have a drink while you wait. The braised octopus is really good! The center cut pork chop is fantastic.
- Gillian BenAryFebruary 23, 2016In Brooklyn. The food rocks. The wine list is a little self-consciously cool, but you can find good stuff to drink. The whole roast chicken, brined in sweet tea, is insane.
- kate kudishDecember 12, 2012the ideal meal: start with grilled tomato and Burratta. The hangar steak, spinach gratin, and pan fried truffle mashed. Finish with Meyer lemon cheesecake. Classics for a reason here...
- Kirill KukuruzaNovember 11, 2016Great Butchers steak for a good price. Love it as well as the grilled eggplants with goat cheese.
- Johnnie SkywalkingAugust 23, 2015They have great fish and vegetables bbq on top of great meat selection. Sardine and Artichoke are especially great.
- Danilo LimaOctober 4, 2013Butcher steak is ridiculously tasty. Order w/ spinach and chanterrelle mushrooms on the side. Burrata and grilled tomato is also awesome. I Don't think they can make anything bad here.
- Ben SternJuly 24, 2016Long lines but worth the wait. Best steakhouse in Williamsburg (yes, better than Peter Luger!)
- Lorena CApril 21, 2013You must get there early, before 6 pm if possible! I tried the butcher steak & the fried mashed potatoes, the best!!! Appetizers are also good! Can't wait to come back soon ;)
- An EPIC meal. The Butcher steak was moderately priced and full of flavor. The strip steak had an great peppery crust. The sunchokes, Bibb salad, spinach, fried mashed potatoes, eggplant were great!
- Butcher's steak, side of long beans and a glass of lambrusco makes the perfect meal!
- Emilie DishonghApril 21, 2015Lamb chop, octopus, fennel and really anything else the ladies pull off that grill. This place is the best thing about Williamsburg by a mile.
- Splurge a little and get the axe handle ribeye. Pair it with a Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA (they have it on tap). Doesn't get any better than that.
- The Meatball ShopJune 15, 2012The butcher steak has us drooling. It's a hefty portion for the price, and if a steak could, this one would melt in your mouth. Pair with the grilled tomato & burrata salad. To die for!
- DannyMay 7, 2016Absolutely great deal for steak! Butchers cut is perhaps the best valued steak in NY not to mention tasty!
- Kimmie OhhJanuary 3, 2020Their piedmontese ax handle ribeye steaks are priced per ounce, minimum 45 oz & are meant to be shared. Their lamb chops are also priced per ounce, minimum 15 oz.
- Rock RainesApril 28, 2019Butcher Steak is the move there. They’re busy at brunch but you can slide in toward the end no problem. Just be ready to order before kitchen closes.
