かつて、山門（比叡山）と寺門（三井寺）の確執が続いていたとき、比叡山にいた武蔵坊弁慶は三井寺の鐘を分捕って、山上の引き摺っていったという。山で撞くと「いのう（去のう）」と鳴ったので、そんなに帰りたいならと谷に突き落とした。そんなことで、傷だらけの鐘なのである。
