明治10年(1877)に南桜小学校が当地に開校。昭和4年に隣接して南桜公園が開園。その後、1964年に南桜小学校が廃校となり、その後その敷地も公園に組み込まれ再整備された。この記念碑は1957年に創立80周年記念の際に建てられたもの。現在も南桜公園に建ち、当時を偲ばれます。
