明治43年（1910）、豊田毒湛（1840～1917／毒湛匝三・高源室／第4代南禅寺派管長）の隠退後の居所として、篤信家の丹治直治郎が寄進し開創された。たまにある展示会などの会場になっているときに中に入ることができるが、基本的に非公開。方丈の障壁画は木島櫻谷の作で、5室50面がそのまま残っているがボロボロ（普段使用されているところなのだから仕方ない）。小川治兵衛の庭園もある。
