    【長崎県指定史跡】慶長元年12月19日(1597年2月5日)、6名の外国人と20名の日本人が豊臣秀吉のキリシタン禁令のため大阪・京都で捕らえられ、長崎に護送され、長崎の町に面したこの地で処刑された。この26名の殉教のできごとは、ヨーロッパその他に広くつたわり、文久2年(1862)ローマ教皇は、盛大な祭典をローマで行い、26名の殉教者を聖人に列し、「日本二十六聖人」と称せられた(長崎市教育委員会)
