    烏丸御池遺跡は，烏丸御池附近を中心とした，南北約600メートル・東西約800メートルという広い範囲にわたって，縄文時代晩期から古墳時代にいとなまれた集落の跡。平安京は，桓武天皇が延暦13(794)年に長岡京から遷都したもので，跡地は現在の京都市街地に重なっており，中京区壬生附近を中心とした，南北約5.2キロメートル・東西約4.5キロメートルの広さにわたっている。
