ConoJuly 18, 2013八世紀末、東北を支配していた蝦夷の首領・阿弖流為（アテルイ）は、中央政府の幾度にもわたる侵略に数十年抵抗し続ける。しかし、遂に坂上田村麻呂に敗れ、同胞の母礼（モレ）と共に京都に連行される。田村麻呂が、敵将ながら二人の武勇・人物を惜しみ、政府に助命嘆願したが受け入れられず、阿弖流為・母礼は処刑された。この史実から、田村麻呂が建立した清水寺境内にこの碑が建てられることになった。
