In 1912 the Grand Picture Palace cinema was built in the corner of Wightman Road and Turnpike Lane. It was demolished in the 1970's as part of a road widening scheme.
Built by Quaker merchant Edward Gray in 1792, the house was demolished in the mid 1880s. Gray built up one of the best private art collections in the country with works by most of the Old Masters. Read more.

In a famed incident Dick Turpin leapt the Hornsey Turnpike on his horse whilst being pursued by a posse led by the chief constable of Westminster. Turpin escaped, making it all the way to York.
