Nearly a century ago, a winged sphere surmounted the pinacle point of Jesse Hall. But during WWI, a rather patriotic individual fastened a giant American flag to the dome, breaking the symbolic wings.

The A.P. Green Chapel has stood on the MU campus since 1959. The nondenominational chapel is open to anyone on campus and can hold 78 people in its oak pews.
Did you know... While this building is primarily used now for fine arts, it wasn't always that way. Built in 1922 as a women's gymnasium, it even has a swimming pool under the floorboards of Rm. 004!
Did you know... On February 2, 1987, University officials designated this newly designed space (then called "Conley Plaza") to be a "speaker's corner," allowing anyone to speak here without a permit.
Did you know... a street was here once, called Kuhlman Court; where small homes existed for faculty and students to live and work in. To the dismay of many, this nostalgic site was demolished in 1984.

Did you know... Waters Hall is more than 100 years old! It was named after Henry J. Waters, the Dean of Agriculture. He also happened to be a Mizzou graduate: class of '86 — 1886, that is.
Check out Ellis Library, where more than 2 million volumes make it largest research library in the state and one of the best university libraries in the country. The main building was opened in 1916!
Did you know... This place is named for Frederick Middlebush, President from 1935-54. Among other things, he was known for his love of ping-pong, and held competitions in the Residence on the Quad!
Did you know... before the construction of Lee Hills Hall, this was the location of a very popular YMCA. Students would often come here to go to the indoor swimming pool or bowling alley.

Did you know... Built in 1871, Switzler Hall is MU's oldest classroom building. Its bell tower used to ring daily, but now only rings on Tap Day or to honor the death of a member of the Mizzou family.
Did you know... Switzler was originally called Scientific Hall, and was later named for Col. William Switzler, a 19th century Columbia newspaperman and member of the Board of Curators.
Did you know... This place was first known as the Education Building while serving as an elementary and high school. It was later named for Loran Townsend, the Dean of Education from 1945 to 1963.
Did you know... Named for Guy Lincoln Noyes, former dean of the School of Medicine. Noyes Hall was originally built and served as a hospital for the School of Medicine.
Did you know... Hill Hall is named for A. Ross Hill who, from 1908 to 1921, served as the University president. This building presently houses many campus administrative offices.
Did you know... McAlester Hall was named for Dr. Andrew W. McAlester, former dean of the School of Medicine and was built to provide space for the School of Medicine, although the school later moved.
Did you know... In 1905, Mizzou agriculture students established the Farmers’ Fair, one of the most successful (and controversial) student-run activities on Campus. It was held annually through 1957.

Did you know... Swallow Hall is named for George Clinton Swallow, MU’s first professor of geology. The building originally held the geology and geography departments, but today it houses anthropology.
Did you know... Named for William L. Parker, of Columbia, this structure was built in 1899 for the School of Medicine. When University Hospital was completed in 1955, the school was moved there.
Did you know... The building at 602 Sanford Place is one of the oldest homes in the Columbia area. Built by Sanford F. Conley, a dry goods merchant, it today houses the General Education Program.
Did you know... Named for Lee R. Tate, a graduate of the MU Law School who died in the World War I, Tate Hall served as the MU Law School until 1988. The English department now occupies the building.
Did you know... Originally called the Academic Building, this place was built to replace Academic Hall that burned in 1892. It was renamed in 1922, honoring former University President Richard Jesse.
Did you know... For the centennial of Francis Quadrangle, a monument for Richard H. Jesse was placed west of Jesse Hall’s main entrance. Jesse was instrumental in rebuilding after the fire of 1892.

Did you know... During the Civil War, MU was used by the Union as a guardhouse, housing Confederate prisoners. Memorial Gateway (at the entrance to the Quad) was created in honor of those who fought.

Did you know... Before this beautiful stretch of land was cleaned up in 1993, this area consisted of parking lots, private housing and businesses.
Did you know... The South Quad, now known as Carnahan Quadrangle, was named in honor of former Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, who was killed in a plane crash in 2000.
At one time, ivy grew on five of the Columns. The sixth was barren because, as the story goes, over a woman's love, a fight between two soldiers ended with one of them being shot at the column's base!
Did you know... before Plaza 900's construction in 2004, a wide row of tennis courts for student use were located where you're standing now.
Did you know... Memorial Tower stood alone from 1926 until 1952 and is approximately 140 feet tall. The North Wing was the first to be completed in 1952. The South Wing was finally finished in 1963.

Did you know... This place was named for former Kansas City Mayor Jay H. Neff, who founded agricultural publications. His son, Ward, a Journalism School graduate, provided funds for its construction.
Did you know... In 1920, Neff Hall included its own printing press that enlarged the six-column, four-page Missourian to an eight-column, eight-page newspaper -- a large accomplishment for its time.
Did you know... Originally called Rollins Field, the Mizzou Tigers football team played here until 1926 and the baseball team until 1959. Turf replaced the grass in 1996, as Stankowski is known today.
Did you know... before this parking lot was here, Reactor Field provided a large, grass recreation field for students. The field was paved in 2005 to create this parking lot.
Did you know... Before the Virginia Avenue Parking Structure was built in 2002, there was a parking lot in this location. This garage was MU's sixth, and added nearly 1,000 spaces for drivers.
Did you know... Don Faurot was coach of Mizzou football from 1935-56. His game record? 101 won, 79 lost and 10 tied; his teams appeared in the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl and twice in the Gator Bowl!
Did you know... This place was originally called the Chemical Building but was later renamed for Dr. John Pickard, who founded the department of art history and archaeology.
St. Patrick's Day 1910: Engineering students crafted a huge paper mule, hanging from a wire stretching high above the Quad. The animal then exploded, showering shamrocks onto confused onlookers below.
Did you know... Engineering Building East (EBE) was renamed Lafferre Hall in 2004 after receiving a gift of $7.5 million from Tom and Nell Lafferre, former MU students.
Did you know... Lowry Mall was once a roadway called Lowry St, until the early 1980s. But the path was so overrun with pedestrian traffic that it was converted into an open plaza for students to roam.
Did you know... This place is named for Donald W. Reynolds, a School of Journalism alumnus. The building brought alumni activities to the center of campus from its old location (near Reactor Field).
Did you know... This field has been the site of research investigations on soil treatments, erosion, and other tasks since 1888. It was designated as a Registered National Historic Landmark in 1965.
Did you know... KOMU started transmitting from its 794-foot tower on December 21, 1953. It is still the only university-owned commercial network affiliate with a newsroom used for training students.
