The Grotto was built in 1896 as a replica of the famed French shrine. For Notre Dame students and alumni, the Grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments in prayer and contemplation.
Although the original Log Chapel is no longer standing, this replica recreates the scene that Father Edward Sorin encountered when he first arrived in Indiana, where he later founded the University.
