South Africa's oldest building surviving intact, the fort was the seat of Government, home to the Court of Justice, Governor's residence, and place of torture, incarceration and execution of slaves. Read more.
Built in 1663, burnt down and rebuilt in1679, this building housed as many as 1000 'inmates' - about 600 slaves, as well as convicts, political prisoners and 'lunatics' in the 17th/18th centuries. Read more.
The museum preserves the memories of the many slave descendants who were forcibly removed from District Six, an area where emancipated slaves settled after 1838, in the 1960s under the Group Areas Act
