July is a time to celebrate our nation's birth. South Carolina played an important role in our freedom, and here are some sites of important Revolutionary War battlefields within our state.
Tell Them: Battle of Cane Break: December 22, 1775: Battle between Americans and Loyalists during the American Revolution (ending in American victory). Historical marker
Tell Them: The Battle of Cowpens (January 17, 1781) was a decisive victory by Continental army forces under Brigadier General Morgan It was a turning point in the reconquest of SC from the British.
Tell Them: February 3, 1779 - a force of South Carolina Militia, including men from Beaufort, under General William Moultrie, defeated the British in their attempt to capture Port Royal Island.
Tell Them: The Battle of Fort Sullivan was fought on June 28, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. It took place near Charleston during the first British attempt to capture the city from American rebels
Tell Them: The Battle of Kings Mountain was a decisive battle between the Patriot and Loyalist militias in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War.
Tell Them: Revolutionary War battle - June 20, 1779. A British expedition retreating from an aborted attempt to take Charleston held off an assault by militia forces under American General Benjamin Lincoln.
Tell Them: The Siege of Charleston was one of the major battles which took place towards the end of the Revolutionary War, after the British began to shift their focus towards fighting in the southern colonies.
Tell Them: On August 16, 1780, British forces under Lord Cornwallis routed the American forces of Major General Horatio Gates about 5 miles north of Camden, strengthening the British hold on the Carolinas.
Tell Them: General Francis Marion attacked and scattered a contingent of Loyalist troops that had been left to secure the region by Colonel Banastre Tarleton after his destructive march through the area.
Tell Them: Buford's Massacre on May 29, 1780, near Lancaster, South Carolina, between a Continental Army force led by Abraham Buford and a mainly Loyalist force led by Banastre Tarleton.

Tell Them: The skirmish which took place here at Alexander's Old Fields, now Beckhamville, on June 6, 1780, was the first victory for S.C. Patriots after the fall of Charleston.
Tell Them: Huck’s Defeat was an engagement of the American Revolutionary War on July 12, 1780, and was one of the first battles of the southern campaign to be won by Patriot militia.
Tell Them: Banastre Tarleton surprised Thomas Sumter's company, killing a significant number, taking about 300 captives, and very nearly capturing Sumter, who some say was asleep at the time of the attack.
Tell Them: During the Battle of Musgrove Mill, August 19, 1780, 200 Patriot militiamen defeated a combined force of approximately 300 Loyalist militiamen and 200 provincial regulars.
Tell Them: Home to the American Revolutionary Living History Encampment & Wildlife Expo which commemorated the 225th anniversary of the SC Battles of 1780, such as the Battle of Great Savannah.
Tell Them: General Francis Marion defeated a band of Tories at the Battle of Blue Savannah on August 13, 1780, by feigning retreat and drawing them into a trap.
Tell Them: The Battle of Blackstock's Farm, an encounter of the American Revolutionary War, took place in what today is Union County, South Carolina, a few miles from Cross Anchor, on November 20, 1780.
Tell Them: Having no cannon at all, Col. Washington places a large log on a cannon carriage & wheels it to the barn threatening an attack on 100 Tories. All 100 surrender at The Battle of Rugeley's Mill, SC.
Tell Them: Battle of Half Way Swamp, Dec 17, 1780. Just beyond Half Way Swamp, it was agreed that each side would select 20 men to decide the battle. At 100 yards the British retreated.
Tell Them: During the Battle of Georgetown, Jan 24, 1781, Lt Col Lee & Brigadier Gen Marion of the SC militia combined forces and conducted a raid on Georgetown, SC, which was defended by 200 British soldiers.
Tell Them: Major Maham built a tower for sharpshooters to fire inside the fort. After days chopping saplings, they erected the tower overnight. Apr 23,1781, firing from the tower led to surrender of Fort Watson.
Tell Them: During the Battle of Hobkirk's Hill, Apr 25, 1781, a Patriot army defended a ridge against an attack by a British force. After a clash, Patriots retreated a few miles, leaving the hill to the British.
