I like to eat here before seeing a show. The food is healthy and the atmosphere far more pleasant than your average Broadway haunt.
If you are on the LES, beat a path here. There will be a line, but it'll be worth it (for the coffee alone!).
So very good, and not particularly expensive. They have good cold mezes. Their eggplant dishes are superb.
Though small, Papa Kebab has some of most authentic -- and best -- Turkish food in the city. They bake their own bread. Try the assorted appetizer platter.
