Extensive and FREE. A great way to pick up some details on Chinese history and culture. We found the bronze & pottery exhibits particularly well done. All signs are also in English.

Beautifully curated history museum. Capacity limited so come earlier in the day. Can't beat the (free) admission. All descriptions written in English and Chinese. Splurge ¥40 for the audio guide.

Impressive in its sheer quantity. The fourth floor's collection of traditional ethnic minority costumes offers a refreshing burst of colour when you get tired of looking at yellowed scrolls. Free. Read more

Shanghai Museum is famous for the bronze artworks. It also has a great collections of furnitures, paintings and calligraphies, but you need to arrive there early to avoid the long queue.

Take time out from viewing artefacts and have some green tea and cake in the cafe. A great way to rest and revive when feeling overwhelmed by all the treasures in the Museum.

Best mainland Chinese museum I ever saw. Place is huge and there's a lot to see. Would compare it to national palace museum in Taiwan.

This is a great museum and it's free! On weekends you have long queues and there are a few scam artists on the outside plaza, so be careful. There is the occasional touring show.

Shop and cafeteria are pre-security. Once you pass the security you only have a cafe on 2F, so be prepared if you want to spend an entire day here.

Kind of a museum of the whole China but not Shanghai (Zaung-hē). If you are interested in the history of Shanghai, better go to Shanghai History Museum, not here.

Chocolate cake (28 rmb) is tasty & fruit cup is fresh. Sandwich has a bit of mayonnaise but ok if you starving (12 rmb). Carrot juice was ok not, too sweet. Cappuccino (30 rmb) is surprisingly nice!

One of China's best history museums. Their bronze, porcelain and Chinese painting exhibits are particularly well done and I would suggest dwelling at every single exibit for at least an hour each.
