The Continental Breads
The breads of The Continental Bakery are works of art. Our loaves are prepared daily from scratch by artisan bakers who really care about good bread & who rely on the most traditional European methods.
The Continental bakery itself is like a medieval shop, where handwork & skill come together w/ attention to detail & natural ingredients to make the most authentic European breads in the southeast.
Many of our French customers have marveled at the historical authenticity of our baguettes, reminiscing about breads from their own childhoods in the French countryside. Nowhere else will you find such extensive use of natural starters, natural methods, & freedom from unnecessary additives & artificial dough "enhancers." All of our breads are shaped by hand & baked on a stone hearth.
A loaf of Continental bread is a true masterpiece. The flavors, fragrance & rustic appearance will transport you to another time & place, where people truly care about quality & craftsmanship.
French Breads
French Bagguette
This signature bread of the Continental Bakery has been one of our specialties since 1984. When compared w/ the modern Parisian baguette, this loaf is a bit more substantial, w/ a denser, more flavorful crumb & a chewier crust. Also available in Ficelle, Peasant, Boule, Sandwich or Rolls.
Wild Yeast Starter Breads
Wild Yeast Sourdough (Pain de Campagne)
Another Continental Bakery signature bread, unique in the southeast & inspired by the breads of the famous Parisian baker, Lionel Poilane. It gets a long, slow, cool rise, is leavened w/ a natural, 20-year old, wild yeast starter that took over a year to develop, & is baked directly on the floor of a stone hearth oven. Available in the traditional 4½ pound loaf of the French countryside. We will gladly cut any whole loaf into halves or quarters.
Italian Ciabatta
This bread is made w/ an Italian style biga starter, & has an airy, open crumb w/ a delicate crackly crust. Jewish Style Sour Rye A deli style rye, made w/ an onion & caraway starter.
Pain aux Noix (Walnut Bread)
Walnut breads are traditional complements to cheeses & serve to clear the palate for wine tasting. Ours includes both whole & ground roasted walnuts to fully infuse the bread w/ a rich walnut flavor.
Callebaut Belgian Chocolate & Cherries
Take imported dark Belgian chocolate & add a heaping scoop of tart Bing Cherries, bake them into a rustic loaf that has been given the precious time it needs to rise & attain culinary perfection!
White Wild Yeast Sourdough
Also made w/ a wild yeast starter & given a long slow cool rise & baked on a stone hearth. However, this bread is made without the addition of whole wheat flour. Available in a two-pound loaf, though we will gladly cut any loaf in half.
Olive Sourdough
We pit imported black & green queen colossal olives & add them to the white wild yeast sourdough. This is one of our most requested breads. Wheatberry Sunflower Bread Cracked kernels of wheat & sunflower seeds in a sourdough based bread.
Pecan Raisin Bread
A levain based bread full of raisins & pecans.
Four Seeded Bread
Equal amounts of golden flax seeds, toasted sesame seeds, toasted sunflower seeds & poppy seeds are added to a natural levain to create a delicious healthy treat.
Traditional Yeasted Breads
Bagels
Hand rolled bagels taste better. We also use the traditional method of kettle boiling rather than oven-steaming this low fat, chewy bread.
Challah
Rabbi Scott's mother-in-law's recipe. Sweet, egg-rich, festive bread, originally baked by Jewish families to grace the Sabbath or holiday table.
Parmesan & Chives Bread
Fresh Parmesan cheese & fresh cut chives are hand-shaped into a miniature sandwich loaf. The perfect platform for finger sandwiches at your next party!
Butterflake rolls
A traditional southern favorite, first introduced to us by Robert Pickens, a baker from the old Waite's Bakery.
Honey Whole Wheat Sandwich
This 100 % whole wheat sandwich bread is sweetened w/ a touch of honey. Old-fashioned White Sandwich Slightly sweet w/ a tender crumb.

Camembert
France-normandy, cow's milk, soft-ripened bloomy rind (edible) ; mild flavor w/ slightly mushroomy aroma. Appropriate wines include burgandy's vougeot; all gamay & pinot noir reds.
Crottin De Champcol
Pasteurized goat's milk, drier in texture than other goat cheeses w/ a slightly nutty flavor. Delicious stored in virgin olive oil & fresh thyme, rosemary or bay.
Comte
Made from unpasteurized cow's milk. Firm in texture & fruity in flavor. Crust is rough & grained. Must carry the label of the franche-comté gruyère association.
Stilton
England's favorite blue cheese; perfect at the end of a meal w/ a glass of port or red wine, good bread & sweet fruit. Also marries well w/ celery at lunch or as a snack.
Saint Andre
Smooth triple cream cow's milk soft ripened cheese.
Brillat-Savarin
France-normandy, triple-creme cheese confection that has hot, rich cream added to its milk to achieve a butterfat content above 75%. Brillat can't be too young (air transport is a must w/ this cheese) . This cheese may be a bit "seasoned," not really aged. Once aged, it becomes a thick "confection-sauce" for fruit.
Tour De Marze Brie
Cow's milk cheese from ile de france. White, soft, bloomy rind; buttery, golden paste; beefy, garlicky flavor. Serve w/ big red bordeaux or burgundy.
Le Biquet (Plain)
Quebec-chesterville, chevre-fromagerie tournevent makes a range of goat cheeses (fresh, aged, in olive oil) . All of their cheeses are excellent.
Explorateur
Decadent triple cream cow's milk cheese w/ a soft, bloomy brie-like rind. Very creamy, very rich, very smooth, big flavor. First made in the 1950s by fromagerie du petit-morin. Explorateur is to cheese as champagne is to wine. Serve w/ fresh berries or tropical fruits.
Saint Marcellin
Soft, ripened, beige rind cow's milk cheese from just north of provence in dauphine. Delicate, very creamy texture; intensely nutty, fruity, rustic flavor. Serve w/ rhone reds, olives & salami.
Manchego
Sheep's milk from spain, mild w/ a pleasant saline nuttiness. Great for grating over baked vegetable dishes. Serve a young manchego w/ sparkling whites, a light navarra red, or fine sherry; w/ aged cheese, opt for a spanish red. Or offer as a dessert served w/ fresh fruit or honey.
Chabis
Goat's milk, soft to firm according to age, natural edible rind, occasional mottling of blue mold, white interior; fresh, sweet, mild flavor (young) ; piquant & intensely nutty flavor (aged) ; soft, moist, spreadable texture (older) . Appropriate wines: if cheese is young, dry whites; if riper, heavier reds.
Banon De Chalais
A mix of cow & goat milks from dauphine that is wrapped in white wine-soaked grape leaves. Soft textured w/ a rustic, earthy, fruity flavor. Serve w/ rose, reds from cotes du provence, olives, & salami or w/ fruits for a dessert.
Pont-L'Eveque
France-normandy, cow's milk, soft, beige to reddish-golden crust; ivory to straw-colored paste; supple texture; camembert-like flavor, but bigger & more intense; pleasantly smelly. Appropriate wines: any full-bodied red bordeaux, rhone, or burgandy.
Mountain Gorgonzola
Cow's milk cheese from the valtallina valley in northern lombardy, aged one year or more. Firm, white interior w/ a moist, spicy, earthy flavor. Serve w/ fresh figs, salads, walnuts & chianti riserva, barolo or sweet marsala.
Boursault
This rich, raw cow's milk cheese is a true triple cream w/ 75% matiere grasse. It is very nutty w/ a creamy, custard-like texture. Serve w/ champagne, vouvray & tropical fruits.
Robiola
Unripened cow's milk cheese-piedmont region of italy. Snowy white w/ a soft, moist & creamy texture; slightly tart, mild, sweet milky flavor & fruity aroma. Serve w/ dry or sweet whites from piedmont such as moscato & fresh fruit.
