It is a Franciscan church. The site was in marshland out the city walls. It is the burial place of the most illustrious Italian such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Foscolo, Gentile, Rossini.
In the 18th century, the palazzo was used as a power base by Napoleon. It was donated to Italian people by King Victor Emmanuel III in 1919, and its doors were opened as one of largest art galleries.
