Education and Leadership: Creating Opportunities
Background – the gap and how we can close it
During the School Year
All kids learn at the same pace and they all move 9 months ahead.
By the End of 5Th Grade
Kids from low-income families fall 2.5 – 3 years behind their middle-income counterparts. This gap continues to widen throughout middle school.
Before the Start of Kindergarten
Kids from lower-income household start 6 months behind middle-income kids, since they lack access to early reading.
During the Summer Months
‘Summer learning loss’ occurs. Middle-income kids, who are able to attend summer programs and go to camp, gain 1 month of learning during the summer. Lower-income kids fall behind 2 months, since they cannot take part in these programs.
Education and Leadership: Foster Reading Center
The mcgaw y is committed to programs that support your children’s success in school.
Some of the activities we will do every day are:
Homework Assistance
One Hour Literacy Instruction by a Certified Teacher; And
Character Development
One Hour of Guided Reading with Local Volunteer Reading Buddies.
Education and Leadership: Project Emerson
The Project
This traveling program provides our middle-school youth the opportunity to gain experiences that help them achieve their full potential.
