Delicious local produce

This year the local produce program at nature’s bin has expanded to include two ohio farmers’ co-ops. Green field farms based out of holmes county consists of all organic & amish farmers. Amish farms use sustainable farming methods to grow their crops including horse-drawn plows & hand harvesting. These methods give off no fuel emissions decreasing the impact on the environment. Green field farms offers a variety of produce along w/ several other products sold throughout the store including organic eggs & cheese. At nature’s bin you can find certified organic, locally grown tomatoes, yellow squash, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini & much more from green field farms.

Also new at nature’s bin this year is produce arriving regularly from the mt. Hope produce auction in holmes county. Started in 1995, the auction is a significant outlet for ohio farmers to sell their produce. It serves the local community by connecting family farmers w/ wholesale produce buyers, & in doing so provides an opportunity for farmers to receive a fair price for their goods. The mt. Hope auction features a large outdoor pavilion that shelters pallets of fresh produce harvested just hours before the sale. A traditional auction takes place five times a week as produce is sold to the highest bidder & hauled away to local retail stores.

Delicious familiar favorites are also back on the shelves this season at nature’s bin. Spiegelberg orchards in lorain is a 100 acre fruit farm in operation since 1920. ken & ruth spiegelberg are in full swing this time of year harvesting cherries & the first crops of summer baking apples. The ever-popular spiegelberg peaches are ripe & ready & as always there will be a tasty variety of local apples & cider in the fall.

Organic blueberries from hunter farms in fairview, pa have also arrived at nature’s bin. “I wait all year for these blueberries, they are the best!” commented natalie coppola, seasonal manager at nature’s bin. Richard hunter has been a certified organic farmer for thirteen years. His farm of 100 acres has eight acres dedicated to blueberry production.

Almost in our own backyard is the 3.5 acre greenhouse which is the home of R.O. Apelt & sons. Located in cleveland, R.O. Apelt & sons has been growing quality cucumbers since 1983 & they are the sole provider of english cucumbers to nature’s bin. Greenhouse owner & manager, frank beckloff uses the newest technologies in computer control for heating, ventilation & irrigation while still hand-harvesting cucumbers daily.

Each spring at nature’s bin we strive to provide our customers w/ everything they need to “get out & get dirty” in the garden. With a selection to please, we offer a variety of annuals & perennials, along w/ vegetables, herbs & hanging baskets. Nature’s bin is a proud supporter of local greenhouses! All the plants we carry are grown in ohio. Some gardening supplies begin to arrive in mid-march & the garden center at nature’s bin is in full swing by the beginning of may.

Enjoy the taste of homemade food without the work or the waste. The deli at nature’s bin is filled w/ a wide selection of freshly prepared foods w/ an international flair. Vegans & vegetarians will find at least half of our unique & delicious dishes meet their needs.

In a hurry? Grab some easy to reheat entrees & a salad for dinner. Or a bowl of soup & a freshly made sandwich or wrap for lunch. You will find at least 10 varieties of homemade soup every day!

Our cooks use organic vegetables whenever possible & gerber’s chicken & grass fed amish beef. We are proud to offer boar’s head deli meats & cheeses, renowned for their flavor & quality. Also now available, are applegate sliced organic lunchmeats & gourmet select nitrate & preservative free items.

Nature’s bin has always tried to support the local economy by purchasing from nearby sources. We are very pleased to offer grass fed beef & lamb from our amish neighbors in ashtabula county, & cheese from the milk of grass fed cows. You will find organic cheeses from local sources, as well.

If you are a vegan or on a gluten-free diet, we have specially prepared treats for you too! We bake off breads from mazzone’s bakery every day & the breadsmith delivers his artisan loaves every morning.
