Group Fitness & Triathlon
One workout plan doesn’t work for everyone. That’s why we offer the largest variety of fitness programming in the area. You’re sure to find something fun that helps you meet your goals. Our weight rooms house 6 lines of weight equipment, and each of our more than 80 pieces of cardio equipment has a built-in television screen. Try a group fitness class – we offer more than 100 each week. Take advantage of our 20 lap lanes and get your workout in the water. Strike up a game of racquetball, or join our pilates classes.
Our member consultants meet with every new member, so don’t worry if you’re not quite sure where to start. We’ll help guide you to the programs and services that fit you best. We’ll also help you stay on track with your workouts, and we’ll suggest new workouts and programs when you’re ready for the next step.
Elmwood's member consultant team helps all new members get started on the right foot. Any member 14 years or older will receive a complimentary appointment with one of our member consultants. They will assess your fitness goals, perform a personal fitness assessment and connect you to all areas of the fitness center that interest you. Our team will inspire you to reach your personal health and wellness goals. Our member consultants can also perform follow up personal fitness assessment testing for a minimal charge.
Aquatics
Work out in the water! Elmwood's first-class aquatics facilities allow us to offer a wide variety of aquatic workouts - from adult swim lessons and water aerobics classes to arthritis aquatics for our seniors.
Elmwood Masters Swim Team
The elmwood masters swim team is available to members 19 and older. You do not have to be a great swimmer to be a member of the team. Registered team members may attend practice as often as they wish. Competition in meets is encouraged but optional.
Senior Fitness
Seniors stay active at elmwood fitness center, not only with exercise classes, but also with a caring and fun social environment. Elmwood organizes lunch and learn seminars on senior topics, and monthly birthday socials.
Senior Classes
Elmwood boasts a variety of exercise classes specifically geared toward seniors. Choose from stretch classes, water aerobics, low impact aerobics, or our silver sneakers classes (chair exercise) . All of our classes are beginner-friendly

Endurance Sports Services
Ben and jeff give multi-sport athletes the competitive edge with customized training, coaching, testing, and nutrition consultations. With an emphasis on muscle power and techniques necessary for a specific interest, training schedules are developed and posted online. Athletes have access to workout routines 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Group Exercise
Elmwood stays on the cutting edge of the fitness industry. We offer the most diverse and innovative selection of classes around, with more than 100 classes per week. All group fitness classes are included as a part of your membership. We offer a variety of classes to satisfy every fitness level and age group – everything from senior classes to zumba!
Adult Swim Lessons
Our instructors are all water safety instructor certified by the american red cross and have an extensive background in competitive swimming. Our staff is comprised of united states swimming coaches, national caliber swimmers and teachers.
Water Aerobics
Elmwood's water exercise classes feature many of the elements offered in our land-based classes, but in one of our 4-foot deep indoor and outdoor pools. Classes are offered for beginning and advanced exercisers of all ages. We have stretching, strengthening and cardio elements in our classes, and also utilize the latest in aquatic exercise equipment. Water exercise classes are included in your membership. There is no need to register in advance for a class.
Line Dancing
Come join us for line dancing and lose weight the fun way. Learn all the latest line dances to all kinds of music. Our advanced line dancers hold several performances throughout the year, traveling to local nursing homes and senior centers and competing in local and regional competitions.
Racquetball
Elmwood is the only club in the state of louisiana that serves as a stop on the united states racquetball association professional tour. Elmwood fitness center features five racquetball courts, including three glass-enclosed courts. We have leagues for members of all ages and abilities. Our adult leagues are held monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday nights, and on saturday mornings.
Ochsner Endurance Sports
Ochsner endurance sports is the gulf coast’s premier multi-sport training authority. Our staff of usat level ii certified coaches has over 20 years of race experience as endurance athletes, 25 years of professional coaching experience, and 10 years of performance testing experience. They can help you prepare for your first race or help you with gaining that extra boost in performance.

Running & Fitness Store: Elmwood Varsity Sports Running Club
The elmwood varsity sports running club is a year-round running program offered by the elmwood fitness center and varsity sports. The program is designed for athletes of all ability levels and the emphasis is on participation, moral support, and fun. During the spring and summer, the focus is on base mileage training, easy running, and having fun. During the fall and winter months, the program is designed to prepare participants for either the marathon or ½ marathon race distances.
Weekly group training runs, wednesdays at 6:00 P.M. and saturdays at 7:00 A.M. start/finish at the ochsner hospital main campus facility.

Running & Fitness Store: Program Logistics
Group training runs start/finish at the ochsner hospital main campus in jefferson, louisiana. We meet on the river road side of the facility and park in the gayle and tom benson cancer center parking lot.
In september, the program participants will start following a training program designed to prepare them for the marathon and half-marathon race distances. *Target race events will include the 2012 jazz half-marathon (sunday, october 28, 2012) and the 2013 rock n’ roll new orleans marathon and half-marathon.
The program is free of charge and open to the public. All participants must complete a registration form and sign an implied consent agreement.
Running & Fitness Store: Good Pain, Bad Pain
“No pain, no gain”….this old-school training phrase has fallen out of favor in recent years, but there is some truth to the old adage. We endurance athletes often talk about the “burn” we feel during a high-intensity workout and we know that in order to strengthen muscles, some “tearing down” must first occur. Overloading a system (within limits) leads to adaptation and an improvement in endurance and/or strength and hopefully, athletic performance.
The mild pain we associate with the “no pain, no gain” phrase is usually caused by muscle fatigue and should subside quickly after a workout. But when does this “good pain” cross the line and become “bad pain” leading to chronic fatigue and injuries?
Bad Pain
Fatigue and muscle soreness are common byproducts of a strenuous workout. If fatigue and soreness last longer than several days there’s a strong likelihood you pushed a workout too hard and need to throttle back on your exercising intensity level and/or duration. It’s also important to allow enough recovery time in between workouts.
Dealing with the Pain
There are several strategies in dealing with exercise-related pain. The first and easiest is to reduce your exercise volume and/or intensity levels. You’ll have to be your own good judge when it comes to deciding how much rest is necessary. I have two hard-and-fast rules i follow when it comes to training with pain:
Exercise-Related Pain
Our musculoskeletal tissues adjust slowly to exercise and stressful workloads. If we push too hard or too fast, our muscles, bones, and connective tissues sometimes “fail” and there’s damage at the cellular level, resulting in significant pain. A good example of this might be if someone has done very little training for two years and then decides to participate in a local 10k road race. Experts call this type of soreness “delayed onset muscle soreness”, or doms for short. Doms is usually a dull, aching pain that rears its ugly head about 24 to 48 hours after a strenuous athletic effort.
Vitamins & Supplements
With over 41,000 dietary supplements on the market, it can be challenging to determine which brand is safe and effective to take. Since the vitamin industry is unregulated, it is not uncommon for products to become adulterated, to contain ingredients not listed on the label, or contain less than what is listed on the label. For example, informed choice, a 3rd party testing lab evaluated 58 protein powders from popular retail stores and found 25% contain steroids and 11% contain stimulants not listed on the label. Neuromuscular Therapy
A more detailed approach to deep tissue when dealing with specific problematic areas. This type of bodywork helps eliminate trigger points, restores postural alignment, increases flexibility to the tissues, and assists venous and lymphatic flow.
Deep Tissue
Therapist uses arms, elbows, knuckles, as well as palms to apply the appropriate amount of pressure. The area to be worked on will be massaged to soften and warm the tissue, then more concentrated depth will help release chronic muscle tension, scar tissue, and adhesions.

Private Yoga/Pilates Training
Private/Group Private Yoga Classes
Are designed to help the yoga student deepen his/her practice. Our private yoga studio is fully equipped with yoga props, and lessons are taught by a qualified, certified yoga instructor. Personal attention in these classes can help students better understand correct alignment for their body type and level of practice. Private and Semi-Private Pilates Classes
Are available for beginner and advanced students using balanced body pilates equipment in our private pilates studio. Pilates focuses on building a healthy, injury-free body by encouraging controlled and concentrated movement. It centers the body with breathing awareness while maintaining dynamic spinal stabilization. Pilates utilizes equipment with spring resistance that simulates normal muscle physiology, integrating muscle synergies. Trx Functional Fitness: Trx Suspension Training Program
Tired of the same old workout? Are you looking for a program that can maximize your time but yield excellent results? Our trx suspension training program targets the entire body with the primary focus of improving total and core strength, flexibility, and balance. The trx suspension system was invented by a navy seal while being deployed overseas and looking to stay fit for combat.

The Military Training Program at Elmwood Fitness Center
Encompasses the type of workout and exercises that you would experience in any aspect of military training. Whether you want to become a member of the military or want a challenging progressive workout routine, this program has something for you. The program offers 2 phases of military style training based on your fitness level.
Commando Training (Level 2)
Is designed for those who have graduated from basic/boot camp training or the well-conditioned individual or athlete who completes the pre-testing guidelines or is preparing for an upcoming event or military training test.
Trx Functional Fitness: Program Overview
6 week program (classes will meet 3 days/week with a certified personal trainer)
Pre and post testing will be conducted to determine your level of fitness
Class duration (each class will be 1-hour in length)

Metabolic Study
A test designed to determine your resting metabolic rate, which consists of about 70% of the calories your body burns at rest in a 24 hour period. Knowing your metabolic rate takes the guesswork out of determining how many calories you need to lose, maintain, or gain weight, depending on your fitness and training goals.
Body Composition Assessment
A 7-site skinfold assessment to determine your percentage of lean muscle mass VS. fat-free mass.
Cardiovascular Fitness Assessment (Vo2 Max)
Using state of the art parvo-medics testing equipment, vo2 max testing is available for healthy individuals to determine cardiovascular capacity, anaerobic threshold, vo2 max, and heart rate max. These results will provide you with the information to develop an individually designed cardiovascular training program.
Lipid Profile Test
This test will determine your total, ldl, hdl, and vldl cholesterol levels in addition to triglycerides and blood glucose. You will also receive a cardiovascular risk assessment based on the results. Our nutrition staff will then develop an eating plan to maintain or improve your results.

Elmwood fitness center and ochsner health system would like to introduce “weight no more”, its new comprehensive weight and lifestyle management program. Under the medical supervision of dr. matthew mcqueen, our 3 month program will provide a unique approach to helping individuals lose weight, keep it off, and reach an optimal level of fitness, while learning to incorporate positive nutritional habits into their daily lifestyle. You will work with a team of medical, fitness, and nutrition experts who have the experience and knowledge to help you reach your health, fitness, and weight goals. Our staff has over 15 years of experience working with weight and lifestyle management clients.

Kids Corner
A healthy lifestyle should start at a young age, and fitness should involve the entire family. With elmwood’s kids’ programs, fitness is always fun! Children of all ages and abilities can get active with a wide variety of programs, from weight loss to nationally ranked competitive teams.
Parents can enjoy worry-free workouts while our professional staff entertains the kids in childcare or kidsports. Or enroll the kids in swim lessons, gymnastics, cheerleading or our general fitness program. During the summer, our kidsports and gymnastics camps offer fun and exciting activities sure to please any child. And we offer the widest variety of birthday parties as well as kids night!
Kids Fitness
Elmwood caters not only to the fitness needs of adults, but also to the needs of children. Children in our y2kids program can participate in a wide variety of classes designed just for them - weight training, cycling, cardio kickboxing and more. We have 11 pieces of weight training equipment and eight cycling bikes custom-made for children. Our instructors are certified personal trainers, exercise physiologists or have experience working with children. The y2kids program is appropriate for children of any skill level, as well as those with special needs or limitations.
Personal training for children ages 6-13 years; 30 minute or one hour sessions available for groups or individuals.
Y2kids field trips: mix fun and fitness on your next field trip. Enjoy a variety of physical activities designed for children ages 7 and up including cycling, kickboxing, weight training and more. There is a 20 child minimum on field trips.
Summer Camps
It's that time of year!!! Summer camp for the kids! And what a better place than elmwood fitness center.
Elmwood fitness center has summer camp all summer long for the kids. With a great outdoor pool area, kidsports, and xrkade interactive gaming, this year's summer camp's will have plenty to do for all kids ages 3 and up.
Starting with the first week may 28th - june 1st - themed "black n gold" - campers will be introduced to fun, fitness, and friends, and then the saints gatorade jr. training camp will be there.
On the Move
Elmwood fitness center is excited about our innovative and community based program called “on the move – driving to fight childhood obesity”. This unique program will give school children ages 9-13 an opportunity to learn about health and fitness in a non-competitive environment. Participating children will have the opportunity to engage in group fitness classes and workout on our custom-made weight training equipment specifically designed for children. Furthermore, our licensed dietitian will provide healthy nutrition information while our chef educates the children with a healthy cooking demonstration. Our staff will also perform pre and post measurements and exercise performance to demonstrate the benefits of exercise while keeping all information confidential.

Children's Swim Lessons
Elmwood fitness center offers swim lessons on a monthly basis. All of elmwood’s aquatic instructors are water safety instructor certified by the american red cross, and have an extensive background in competitive swimming. Our program has a child appropriate teaching philosophy and recommends that parents view all classes. Our swim lesson program is available year round for children and adults, members and non-members.
Waterbabies
For children 6 months to three years old (children must be accompanied by an adult in the water) . Give your child a head start in swim lessons. Waterbabies, the first step of our swim lesson program, is an "under three" interactive program with parent (s) or guardian and child
Swim Teams
Elmwood offers two types of swim teams at its facility. The uss swim team, which is a year round competitive team geared towards kids from the ages of 5-18, and a master’s team. Master’s is geared towards adult swimmers who are looking to stay in shape, and also for tri-athletes who are looking for some training in swimming. The coaching staffs of both teams are highly-trained, and all have swimming backgrounds. The uss swim team has produced many high caliber national swimmers in the past few years, and placed very respectfully in the louisiana state championship meet.
Private Swim Lessons
For individuals who need special instruction at their own convenience. Beginners, competitive swimmers and tri-athletes are welcome. We offer under-water analysis and a stroke improvement program for tri-athletes.
Jojo's Hope Adapted Aquatics Program
A charitable swimming and aquatic activity program in which teaching methods and student activities are adapted to meet the needs of individuals who, because of a mental or physical impairment, cannot readily achieve success in a regular swim program. The classes are held on sunday afternoons, and the program is by appointment only. Suitable for all ages. Applicants must fill out a registration form and medical release.
Gymnastics
The elmwood gymnastics academy offers a comprehensive instructional and competitive program in artistic gymnastics and tumbling. Our teams consistently place high in every meet, with several of our teams and individuals earning national awards and recognition each year. The gymnastics academy has a professional staff of certified coaches and instructors who take pride in offering the highest quality of instruction in a positive and caring atmosphere.
Recreational Girls Artistic Gymnastics
Classes for our school age gymnastics program are divided by skill level. Children generally attend one to two classes per week. Pre-teams and teams are available as well by invitation. Please call to schedule a tryout for our team, or to schedule a free trial in our girls recreational classes.
Elmwood Gymnastics Birthday Parties
Have your child’s next birthday party at the elmwood gymnastics academy. Our gymnastics spectacular party includes 90 minutes in our 18,000 sq. Ft. gym, followed by a combination of beam, bars, trampoline, rope swing, vault, floor, space walk, and a special bungee, all lead by our party professionals! You will also 30 minutes in the party area with a package that includes punch, ice cream, a goodie bag and balloons for each child, and a party t-shirt and 1-month free classes for the birthday child!
Pre-School
We have four levels of pre-school classes for children ages walking to 6 years - tiny tots (walking through age 3; with parent participation) , jumpin' jacks (3-4 years old) , munchkins (4-5 years old) and kinder-kiddies (5-6 years old) . Children attend one class per week.
Tumbling
Children in our tumbling program attend class once or twice a week. Our tumbling program is one of the finest in the state and includes a member of the usag elite national coaching staff. Pre-teams and teams are available for boys and girls of all ages. Call to schedule a free trial class!
Gymnastics Academy Kids’ Nights
Parents – plan a friday night out and let us entertain your children at kids’ night! The elmwood kidsports at harahan is a complete facility for children ages 6 weeks to 13 years. We offer an array of exciting programs that combine fun and fitness in a safe and friendly atmosphere.
Adventure Challenge
While you work out, your kids can enjoy our adventure challenge - a two-story, indoor maze with 100 yards of slides, tunnels, ropes, balls and more! Children are constantly supervised, and the adventure challenge meets all maximum safety standards. The adventure challenge is open to members and non-members, and it can make any birthday party or field trip a huge success!
Field Trips at Kidsports
Have your next field trip at kidsports. Spend an hour in our adventure challenge - our two-story, indoor maze with more than 100 yards of slides, tunnels, ropes, balls and more! Spend more time with us for additional fun and games including our spacewalk.
Summer Camp and Holiday Camps
Kidsports offers a fantastic summer camp and several special holiday mini-camps throughout the school year. Your child can enjoy up to 12 weeks of summer camp at kidsports - crawling through our giant, two story adventure challenge, playing on our pirate ship playground, bouncing in our own spacewalk, swimming in our beautiful outdoor pools, creating arts and crafts, and going on exciting and educational field trips each week. Of course we also have special events throughout the summer, like magic shows and pony rides
Childcare
Parents - include your children on your membership for a nominal fee, and they'll get two hours of childcare while you work out. Parents whose children are not members may use childcare for $5.00 an hour, with a two-hour limit per day. Parents may not leave elmwood while the child is in childcare. This program provides a worry-free day for parents while your child enjoys fun and games, an obstacle course, spacewalk, arts and crafts, our outdoor pirate ship playground, snacks and our very own adventure challenge!
