Placed in reserve in 1835, this is one of the oldest sites in the U.S. dedicated to public recreational usage. It is named after the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa.
Seaport Village was built on landfill where the Spanish expedition of 1782 buried those who had died of scurvy. In later years, it served as a railroad yard to send items east that arrived by ship.
