1 番線がないのは、2 番線の外側にある下りの通過線が 1 番とカウントされているため。5 番線の外側にも 6 番線となる上り用通過線がある。

菊名始発終着の列車は当駅で優等の通過待ちのみで緩急接続をしてくれないが、上りの場合、この通過待ちの間にいちど目黒線に乗り換えると、武蔵小杉で抜かれた優等列車に乗り継げる。

改札口が渋谷側一箇所のため、人の流れが常に同じ方向。混雑時は歩きにくい。改札階の無駄な空間をホーム階に回したいくらいだ。

改札を出た所に、植物を植えたちょっとした憩いの場があって、大きなガラス張りの外には遠くまでの東急の線路と武蔵小杉の高層マンション群を一望できる。一見の価値あるよ。電車好きの小さな子供は絶対喜ぶ！

元住吉駅の裏側には広大な敷地の東急の車庫があって、ほとんどの種類の東急車輌がずらりと並んでる。ここも電車好きの小さな子供が喜ぶスポット。
