    京都御所の固める九つの門の一つで、南に位置し堺町筋に面しています。幕末期には、八・一八の政変と禁門の変（蛤御門の変）の舞台になっています。当時は、この門を挟んで東側に鷹司邸、西側に九条邸が建っていました。
