    平井の台地の先端の崖にあり、６世紀から８世紀の古墳時代後期の横穴墓が、３００基以上あると考えられている。公園内の２００基近い横穴墓が史跡に指定されている。横穴が造られている地質は、箱根火山の噴火の際に流れ出した箱根火山新期軽石流と呼ばれる軽石を主体としているため、横穴を加工しやすい反面壊れやすい性質もあるためか、鉄製のノミの跡も確認できる。
