近畿日本鉄道の鉄道駅であり、近鉄京都駅に直通する橿原線、大阪阿部野橋方面の南大阪線と吉野方面の吉野線の接続駅。軌道幅が違う関係で、前者と後者2路線は直通ができない。駅ナカは比較的充実しており、コンビニとドラッグストア、パン屋やいくつかのテイクアウトの食品店がある。
