開館日は基本的に、1月1～3日・1月25日・2月25日・3月25日・梅まつり期間中の土日祝・4月18日・釋奠の日。その他は要予約。国宝6点（菅原道真遺品［青白磁円硯・銀装革帯・玳瑁装牙櫛・伯牙弾琴鏡・犀角柄刀子・牙笏］）、重要文化財2点などを収蔵している。
