鄭南榕，在戒嚴那風聲鶴唳的年代，發行《自由時代》週刊批判時事，公開主張”台灣獨立“。1989年4月7日，鄭南榕為了堅持百分百言論自由、拒絕因刊登台灣新憲法草案遭判亂罪起訴逮捕，於雜誌社自囚71天後自焚殉道。
