    대부분의 주상절리가 수직기둥형태로 되어있는데, 읍천항의 주상절리는 가로로 누워 수직과 수평방향의 절리를 동시에 보여 주고 있다. 이런 모양은 세계적으로 유례를 찾기 어려운 형태라고 한다.
