JR東海道線、京浜東北線、山手線、横須賀線(成田エクスプレスも一部列車が停車)、東海道、山陽新幹線の乗り換え駅です。また、2027年に開業予定のリニア中央新幹線の、首都圏側の始発駅です。私鉄は京急が乗りいています。駅弁として、深川飯、鳥飯などがあります。駅周辺には多くの大規模ホテルや超高層ビルが立ち並んでいます。

品川駅で、京急から新幹線に乗り換え。Suicaで乗車券を払い、特急券のみ購入した。特急券を入れSuicaをかざしたが、改札でストップ。駅員に尋ねたら、できないとのこと。改めて乗車券を購入しギリギリ新幹線に間に合った。いい勉強になった。

北改札と中央改札はホーム経由でないと改札を出なければ行き来できません。京急は、中央改札側からでないと乗り換えが面倒です。

常磐線のほとんどの特急の始発、終着駅です。快速や普通列車も乗り入れますが、宇都宮線や高崎線が中心です。常磐線は今まで通り上野駅始発で座りやすいかもしれません。

駅ナカで服も本もケーキも何でも買えちゃう。蕎麦屋は不味い。カレー屋は高い。豚骨ラーメンも不味い。おにぎりは美味しい。

常磐線直通の上野東京ラインはこの駅を始発・終着としていて、特急ひたち号・ときわ号も発着しています。東京・上野方面の列車が発車するホームの数は多いのでホームに行く前にどのホームが一番先に発車するか確認することをお勧めします。

エキュート等の所謂「エキナカ」なお店は中央改札側なので、こちらから入るとホームを回らないといけません

朝の山手線→東海道線の乗り換えが辛すぎる。五反田よりの車両から人の少なめの乗り換え通路を使ってどうにか乗り換えできる。
