Phytochemistry/Research: The study of herbal phyto-chemistry of several most popular healing herbs, their uses, ratings, safety issues, dosage, and research behind the plant. Herbal treatments will be discussed for over several medical conditions including: cancer, migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, and arthritis

Plant Identification/Harvesting: A detailed study of botany in relation to herbal medicine. Plant anatomy, identifying, cultivating and harvesting herbs. Students will learn how to make their own herbal remedies, including healing balms, lotions, teas, syrups, oils, tinctures, and more. Well also discuss the entire process of preparing herbal medicines at home, from methods of growing, gathering, and drying herbs, to different ways of extracting their vital essences. Students will be expected to send in a sample of a homemade remedy during their final grading

Business Procedures Jurisprudence: Students will learn how to set up their own practice and how to avoid legal complications. Standard disclaimer forms will be presented, which should be used while practicing any aspect of herbal medicine

This course will teach the proper procedures of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) waived laboratory tests approved by the Federal Government. Pathologies related to the Urinary system and cardiovascular system. Upon completion of this course the practitioner will be able to use test kits to determine the presence of various substances in the client's system, cholesterol, ph balance, protein, leukocytes and ketones. The student will learn how to interpret the results of the test and learn the various remedies and food to recommend in order to assist the client back to a balanced and healthy system. Pathologies related to the Immune/Lymphatic System will be discussed. CLIA tests for infections, mononucleosis, lyme disease, HIV, carcinoma and nonspecific screening test for inflammatory activity, will be demonstrated. Massage therapists enlighten couples with information on body mechanics & massage styles before leading a 1.5 hours of hands-on demonstrations. Under the tutelage of licensed and certified massage therapists partners will settle into a two-hour crash course covering massage techniques, muscle manipulation, and sleight of hand in a small group of like-minded pairs. Make tension disappear with knowledge of body mechanics, endangerment sites, and techniques such as deep tissue, petrissage, effleurage, and trigger point. Students spend the first 30 minutes ingesting info as a group before putting their lessons into practice during 1.5 hours of hands-on demonstration. Instructors work with each couple to guide them through the finer points of Swedish strokes, compression techniques, and untying knotted up muscles into a relaxed carefree way. It is the study of the origin, nature, and course of diseases as it relates to natural health care. Her first health care experience was in nursing at several local hospitals and health care facilities. She later studied and received certificates in: homeopathy, Reiki, acupressure, and hypnotherapy. She has a B.S. degree in Nursing and a Doctorate degree in Homeopathy. She is Fedrally CLIA Certified through the Washington DC Department of Health and is licensed in Nursing and Massage by Maryland and Washington, D.C. She has lectured to many local groups on a variety of topics emphasizing natural treatments. Dr. Goldsten has been instrumental in educating the public in the differences between Traditional Naturopathy and Naturopathic Medicine. She has created her own treatment manual of natural health care covering therapies for physical and psychological problems. She is currently working as the Director and an Integrative Homeopath at the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine. She worked for four years at the Mount Pleasant Natural Health Care Center offering natural health exams free of charge or at reduced rates to low income families of the community. Dr. Goldsten is currently the director of the Alternative Medicine Department of the Washington Home and Hospice in Washington, D.C. She is in charge of the natural treatment of clients with a variety of severe illnesses such as Alzheimer's, dementia, AIDS, and ALS; under the supervision of the Washington Home's medical director

This exam is a comprehensive study of the human body using observation skills from the Orient and Europe. It is a preventative approach focusing on organ system efficiency and cleansing. For each client the exam consists of a combination of alternative modalities; Iridology, Tongue analysis, Facial Observation, Pulse analysis, a Japanese Hara technique. Remedy testing, and Natural Treatment plan recommendations

Reiki is a touch therapy method that uses chi (energy) to bring balance and improve health. The practitioner applies a light touch to the client or works slightly above the body in the client's energy field. This approach to energy healing connects with the subtle energy of life to feed and balance the body's own subtle energy system, leading to greater well-being. During a session the mind and body attains a peaceful, restful state which empowers the body's natural healing abilities to occur. During a session the client relaxes on a massage table, staying fully dressed with their shoes off

The use of Acupressure combined with Reiki. This therapy combination balances energy systems, provides relaxation and supports health. It also works on the energy systems to clear blockages and helps put the body back in balance

The 7 major chakras are located up the front of the body - they also have a back side that runs up the spine. These centers are continually turning when the body is functioning properly. However, our stressful lives can take a toll on the centers and cause them to "go out of balance". The Chakra energy balance is not specifically felt, but it's weaknesses are reflected in physical illness, joint aches and pains, emotional upset, anger, lasing out behavior, difficult personal communication, and more. People who are sensitive to energy can feel they are out of balance, or that something is not quite right, no matter what they try to do. The Chakras are strongly connected to the nervous system's electrical energy thereby reacting with it

I went to anger management classes but I needed more. I found Dr. Goldsten and the experience was amazing. She was spot on with her assessment of my energy and how it connected with my life. These types of methods are offered by doctors of naturopathy, herbalists, homeopaths, nutritional consultants, holistic practitioners and other types of natural health care practitioners. The practitioner evaluates subtle imbalances within the body and then recommends a natural health care treatment plan. The treatment may include nutritional guidance, natural remedies, supplements, bodywork, exercises, guided imagery or stressmanagement techniques. Some businesses have offered employee appreciation days or health fairs to staff members."

"The greatest improvement in building a cost-effective, high-quality system will be to strengthen our deteriorating primary care provider network. Sophisticated studies show that one of the major differences between our system and those of other more costeffective countries is that far less of our care is provided by primary care physicians. Other studies show that those areas in our country where the per-patient costs are lowest have the highest concentration of primary care doctors and those with the most specialists have the highest cost. Again, the quality of care is equal or better in the high primary care areas."

Interns, or doctor's assistants, she offers her exams or treatments at a reduced rate. In these circumstances clients are willing to have shared attention and shadowing is permitted

Space is very limited for these positions and clinical contact hours cannot be guaranteed due to Dr. Goldsten's workload. She has to tend to her personal clients and the running of the Institute. Those that apply for the shadowing positions must meet Dr. Goldsten's criteria

The Institute has historically had difficulties with students being irresponsible with the data they have received. Many times the practitioner has been misquoted or the credentials published incorrect. The Interviews have not been taken seriously

These errors can severely jeopardize the professional. If interviewed by a student, the document needs to be approved prior to completion. It is important that practitioners have the ability to review anything that has been written or filmed because wrong information could get into print or on video that could harm a person or the livelihood of the practitioner

The student will have to meet with the Director Dr. Goldsten in order to determine what can be done. Dr. Goldsten charges a consultation fee of $95 per hour. Upon approval of an article or filmed interview, a contract will have to be created by the student's school/teacher for the purpose of the interview and filming. This contract will have to state that the Washington Institute must review and approve the document or film prior to completion

Date: 1/30/2008 6:32:42 PM. "Dr. Goldsten helped me - lymph node repair After having a stress test I was advised to have an angiogram due to the results of the test and family history. Following the procedure I started having pain in the groin area and also my leg gradually got black and blue like it was bruised. After many complaints the doctor finally ordered a CAT scan and a sonogram of the area. The results of the tests revealed that the artery had not healed properly and blood was seeping out which caused the bruising of my leg and also an aneurism had formed. Artery reconstruction surgery was required to remove the aneurism and repair the artery. After the surgery I began to experience severe pain in the surgical area. A MRI was performed and the results showed that the lymph gland was damaged during the reconstruction surgery. It was recommended that I have additional surgery to cauterize the gland to correct the situation. I was told that this was the only way to solve the problem. I did not want to undergo additional corrective surgery so I contacted Dr. Goldsten to see if the lymph gland could be repaired with natural or homeopathic treatment. Dr. Goldsten put me on a professional homeopathic formula designed to heal lymph nodes. Within three weeks the pain was gone. On occasion if I happen to exert myself with excessive walking or exercise I will use the formula to help protect and heal my lymph system.The above MRI also detected fibroids in the uterus. I contacted Dr. Goldsten and started on a remedy directed toward this condition. A short time later I had a pelvic sonogram and was told that they could not see any fibroids. Also in the past, when I had my routine colonoscopy, small polyps would be removed. The next colonoscopy I had after taking homeopathic remedies showed that there was no polyps in the colon. Dr. Goldsten has been caring for the sick since 1973 and is currently working at the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine in Washington, D.C. She is the director of the alternative Medicine at the Washington Home and Hospice."
