As a tourist you can't bypass skating at the rink, it's an icon! The time is restricted, there're many people queueing. Still I recommend taking the plunge. You're in NY and at the Rockefeller center!
The construction time of the Rockefeller Center started in 1931 and took 9 years until 1940. Christmas Day 1936 in the ice-skating rink at the Lower Plaza was installed for the first time.
If you have not skated at the Rink at the Rock then you haven't lived... BTW get there early to avoid the long queues. Saks has good winter shows displayed on the walls opposite too this year (2012)
The rink just opened today as I leave this comment. If you are here during the winter season, something you need to check out at least once. It is some sight once the tree goes up!
Want to test out that new telephoto lens and your camera's tracking focus abilities? Try it at the Rockefeller Center skating rink. Try using your center focus point and panning with the subject.
The most famous of rinks is still as cramped as ever. Unless you plan on going early in the morning or between 9am and noon on Thanksgiving, expect a one- to two-hour wait. Read more
There is one sign in all of ther plaza that tells you where to go, and it's nowhere near the actual entrance. No security around to give directions either. If you can afford just get express tickets.
