Programs
Pre-K
The Y has a variety of programs for even the youngest New Yorkers. From pre-school to stroller strut to music class to yoga, the Y helps babies become toddlers, toddlers become tots, and tots become strong kids --all through programs grounded in our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility
Pre-K: Child Care
From a safe and fun place for your pre-schooler to spend an hour when you exercise in our Child Watch program to attending a great nursery school, the Y offers a variety of programs to keep your child engaged while you are apart. Program offerings and fees vary by location.
Universal Pre-Kindergarten is a partnership with the New York City Department of Education and is licensed by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. UPK runs Monday-Friday for 2.5 hours, in an AM or PM session. The child must be born in 2008 and be toilet trained. The program is available at the following Y locations: Broadway, Cross Island, Flatbush, Flushing, Long Island City, and South Shore
It’s never too early to develop a love of learning. The Y has a myriad of classes to help you nurture your child’s intellectual curiosity. Language Classes
Forget videos and apps, teach your child another language the old fashioned way in a language class. The Y offers pre-k language classes in Spanish and Mandarin at select branches. click here to browse classes near you.

Universal Pre-K
YMCA early childhood centers offer a free universal pre-Kindergarten program for four-year-olds. UPK places its focus on the healthy development of the whole child by providing a safe, happy, nurturing environment where children are intellectually, socially and physically stimulated while participating in fun activities. The curriculum is based on learning centers and a theme-based approach to learning. Each classroom is equipped with listening, block, math/science library, computer, dramatic play, art, and sand and water centers
Child Watch
Do you need someone to watch your child when you are at the Y? We’re here for you. At Child Watch, kids will enjoy fun and creative play all in a safe environment while you exercise or take a class. All Child Watch schedules are included in your branch program guides. Click your local Y under location and take a look.
Infant Care
YMCA infant centers are designed to meet your child's individual needs by ensuring positive attention and development. Because this is a critical time in your child's life, our infant care focuses on the development of the whole child and equips even infants with essential skills for lifelong learning. YMCA staff are trained especially for this delicate and inquisitive age group. Because a well-trained staff is a key factor in quality infant care, staff members are required to attend numerous training sessions throughout the year. Infant Care is available at the West Side and Vanderbilt Branches.
Nursery School
Is it time for your toddler to get their first school experience? The Y has more than 40 years of experience operating quality Nursery School programs in Manhattan. Learn about the CO-OP Nursery School at the West Side Y, or the Early Childhood Center at the Vanderbilt Y.

Competitive Sports and Swimming

Youth Sports
The Y offers an array of exciting sports programs for kids to learn the in’s and out’s of a sport they are passionate, and classes can be progressive so they will develop skills and coordination over time. Youth sports programs include - baseball, basketball, boxing, flag football, general fitness and exercise, gymnastics, squash, racquetball, handball, tennis, kickball softball and volleyball. Youth: Camp
Our camp programs offer youth opportunities to experience camping through both overnight and day camp. Whether it's through singing or swimming, nature hikes or computer classes, counselors at YMCA camps lead kids in developing new skills and having fun.
Y camps are not just for summer. Year-round opportunities exist at many of our camps.

Y Scholars
Less than half of New York City’s high school graduates are prepared for college. Y Scholars helps all students and their parents realize that college is a real and attainable option. Each year, Y Scholars is introduced to a new class of sixth graders, leading them through high school on a seven-year path to college. Learn more about the program here
Youth and Government
Youth and Government lets young people experience how our nation’s democratic process works from the inside out. Starting with issues that stir their passions, teens learn to debate public policy, write legislation and (simulate) taking over the State Legislature in Albany. Proposed legislation originating with Youth and Government participants has gone on to be presented by actual legislators and signed into New York State Law. Organized in 1936 in the State of New York, the YMCA Youth and Government Program is now a national program of the YMCA held in 38 states with more than 46,000 students from all walks of life involved

Jr. Leaders Clubs
You can meet many of tomorrow’s leaders today at the YMCA Leaders Club, a leadership incubation program that gives teens the opportunity to learn to become more effective in their interactions with others. Tweens improve their individual leadership and social skills while also experiencing new ways to give back and grow as human beings. Tweens meet on a weekly basis in small groups to develop and implement projects aimed at providing valuable service to their local community. Learn more about the program here

Today's teens are tomorrow's leaders. Y teen programs offer New York City young people a forum to be heard. Through civic engagement program, health and fitness activities and special interest clubs, teens can connect with their peers while giving back to their community

Teens Take the City
Teens Take the City is a dynamic leadership development program that offers NYC teens the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get involved in issues affecting them and their community. Teens engage in community mapping to figure out how to better their community, work in small groups to identify a law to address the issue, develop a policy proposal that is debated for other teens at City Hall, learn the history and function of NYC government, and meet and interview a NYC official. Once students have developed a policy proposal, they will implement their initiatives in their community through youth-lead service learning activities. Talk about social responsibility at its best!
College Preparation
The Y can your child prepare for college. From touring colleges together with teens from the neighborhood to filling out necessary paper work, Y teen staff can help get you take charge of the college application process. Contact your local Y teen director for more information.
Y Scholars

ESOL/New American Initiative
The YMCA of Greater New York is committed to serving the immigrant population of the City, and, in response to their needs, has opened New Americans Welcome Centers to help immigrants achieve literacy, cultural competence, and self-sufficiency. The YMCA established Welcome Centers in areas where immigrant communities are most underserved. The goal of the YMCA is to be recognized by every New American as a “safe haven” that provides multilingual information, resources and referrals and a wide range of services (instructional, vocational, recreational, and family support) that will help them attain their goals. The Chinatown, Staten Island, Harlem, Prospect Park, Flushing and Bronx YMCAs have already served their communities through these centers

By focusing your family’s efforts to live healthier around the Y’s pillars of a healthy family home and taking small steps using the information and tools we provide, your family will soon be feeling stronger and living healthier.
