Quite far from Manhattan city. Way finding inside the airport is poorly designed.
Avoid long Taxi lines and call an UberX. They arrive in minutes, it's a sweeter ride than a smelly cab and its a $60 flat rate to Manhattan.

Never arrive from abroad at 6 am. That's when the customs officers change shifts and it is NOT an efficient process.
When it's raining and 212 777 7777 fails you, call Carmel at 212 666 6666 (yes seriously... All 6s)
not as bad an airport as people make it out to be. travel is a breeze here. not as bad as people think. lots of terminals and easy access to all terminals via air train.
Terminal 4: Wok & Roll (before security) won't substitute rice for veggies, but Panda Express (after security) will.
Avoid Super Shuttle at all costs. Take the subway or LIRR
