By total contrast, this navarra moscatel is a much darker tawny brown and much more savoury by virtue of 3 years ageing in old oak butts. Below is our rare and fine wine list: Vinos Blancos
Viña Tondonia Blanco Gran Reserva 1964*
695-00
(RIOJA) Distinctly golden in hue; dry, tangy and fresh with elements of witch hazel oak, a touch of citrus, some butterscotch and good acidity.
Que bonito cacareaba! 2010
55-00
(RIOJA) This most oddly named wine is currently all the rage in Spain and what it means is ‘How pleasingly he clucked’. Made by innovative young winemaker Benjamin Romeo, it’s a fascinating oak and lees-aged blend of Viura, white Garnacha and Malvasia from old vineyards; golden in colour and distinctively creamy, it’s flavour is a fascinating fusion of sweetish, aromatic oak and pear with delicate overtones of pineapple and apricot.
Palacio Do Fefinanes Albarino 2010
39-95
(RIAS BAIXAS) The ultimate Albarino fro the region’s most historic producer, renowned fro it’s elegance: light, dry and delicate with distinctive appley character overlaid with elements of white fruit and elderflower
Vinos Tintos

40-00
(COSTERS DEL SEGRE) Tempranillo, Cabernet, Garnacha and Merlot. Intense purple black wine full of black fruit flavours, char-grilled spice and chewy tannins. Long and lingering.
Guelbenzu Lautus 2004
48-00
(RIBERA DEL QUEILES) Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a little old Garnacha; this is lush and yet ever so fine, its pure blackcurrant core embellished by just a hint of chocolate and fragrant, understated French oak.
Contino El Olivo Reserva 2005
80-00
(RIOJA) This marvellous single estate wine comes from a sister establishment of CVNE; is warm, full and fragrant with ripe red fruits and deliciously spicy oak. Drinking perfectly.
Vega Sicilia – Valbuena 1997
115-00
(RIBERA DEL DUERO) 80% Tinto Fino, 15% Cabernet, 5% Merlot and Malbec. Those lots of Vega Sicilia which are of high quality but not suited to extra long ageing are selected for 2nd wine Valbuena. The 1997 has a deep black colour with purple tints. The bouquet is elegant and complex, maintaining perfect harmony between fruit and wood; providing on the palate a full, rich, satisfying mouthful of tremendous length.
Mas la Plana 1981 Torres
160-00
(PENEDÈS) A bit of a myth ever since it cleaned up at the Paris Wine Olympiad in 1971, this continues to be Spain`s finest Cabernet Sauvignon; and this particular vintage a family favourite - a polished mixture of plum, blackberries, dark chocolate and cedar. A perfect accompaniment for game and meat dishes
Vega Sicilia
(RIBERA DEL DUERO) Spain’s most prestigious wine estate, which lies on the fringe of the village of Valbuena some 40 minutes east of Valladolid, was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves and was planted not purely with local Tinto Fino/aka Tempranillo but also with Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec sourced from nurseries in Bordeaux. These remain the 4 grape varieties employed and the top wine, Único, is only made in vintages considered appropriate – the blend varying considerably and the wine until quite recently spending a minimum of 10 years in oak bocoyes (of 300 to 400 litre capacity) of American, French and Eastern European oaks made on site, at the winery’s cooperage.
Único 1985*
400-00
This is altogether richer and more opulent with more emphasis on dark fruits.
L’Ermita Álvaro Palacios
270-00
(PRIORATO) Álvaro Palacios is one of Spain´s ‘young guns´, and though his family are from Rioja, he has deliberately forged his reputation further afield; and though he is not at all pretentious (we first met him many years ago in Falset swigging a bottle of Barolo on the pavement in front of Falset’s one and only hotel!) L’Ermita is perhaps the most expensive wine of Spain. L’Ermita 1997 “Arguably the finest individual red in Spain. Unbelievably good!” 96/100 The Wine Spectator
Beronia Coleccion Especial 2009
35.95
(RIOJA) Made from 100% Tempranillo, this luscious red has undertones of cocoa and mocha, with hints of vanilla, making this a meaty and well rounded wine
Chafandin 2007
45-00
(RIBERA DEL DUERO) Since it’s first vintage (2003) this wine wins gold medals by the bucketful and generally blows people’s socks off! Made from centanary Tinto Fino and aged for between 14 – 20 months in American and French oaks, it is dark, silky and rich beyond words- with majestically intertwined dark red fruits, earthy cocoa, gentle tannins, minerality and broadly a whole array of smoothly integrated, captivating characteristics. long too!
Mauro 2006
52-00
(RIBERA DEL DUERO) Made from Tinto Fino, with a small percentage of Syrah, this is aged in semi new American oak: “Deep crimson coloured, it exhibits a nose of balsam wood, violets, licorice, and blackberry. On the palate it has a racy, elegant personality, sweet fruit and tasty flavours”. 92+/100 The Wine Advocate
Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva 1976
195-00
(RIOJA) Although the blend here is very similar to that of sister wine Tondonia, the grapes are grown on a different estate (one of 4 at López Heredia) ; and though Bosconia tends to be bigger, softer, and earthier it often lasts longer! “… really remarkable acid/fruit balance. Big, rich, powerful and deep. Finishes extremely long and magically fresh”. 96/100 Steve Tanzer, International Wine Cellar.
Calvario 2002 – Finca Allende
110-00
(RIOJA) Made by the most extraordinary Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, who is better known for Allende and Aurus, this is in fact his best wine, made from old vine Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha and 2% Graciano growing on a single plot on a hill (Calvario is of course Calvary/Golgotha in English…) just outside Briones and with 14 months in a variety of French oaks. Palish cherry red; with a very intense bouquet of mature jammy black fruits, hints of violets and roses, mineral elements, and smoky, spicy, slightly balsamic oak; this is dense, brisk and potently flavoured with a slightly salty tang; and needs to be partnered with most seriously flavoured food!
astillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 1968 Marqués de Murrieta
295-00
(RIOJA) Made primarily from Tempranillo, this wine is now light orangey sandalwood in colour; with a bouquet of cassis, white pepper, coffee, leather, candied fruits, tiramisu, kirsch and sloes; yet smooth, silky and rich on the palate with all its initial aromas coming back again on the finish. Muy, muy rico…
Único 1990
300-00
This was a light year and the wine 80% Tinto Fino and 20% Cabernet with just 7 and a half years in 4 different sorts of oak. It is now very mature: with an abundance of oak, leather, tobacco, a touch of chocolate, has balsamic, slightly mentholated notes and quite high acidity still.
Único 1965*
500-00
Quite glorious still, the colour is notably paler; the wine thinner and finer but silky smooth, and elegant with nuances of dark fruit, a pronounced cedary tang and excellent acidity still holding everything together
L’Ermita 1996
300-00
Please noteA fair proportion of these wines are absolute rarities which have not been
